“TONING UP”

I read something interesting in my Certificate III in Fitness course today, it was discussing how the use of the term toning up is actually incorrect physiologically.

The tone of the muscle refers the the state of contraction of the muscle at rest and therefore anyone who has an intact and functioning nervous system has all the tone they are ever going to have.

Muscles also only have two physiological responses that change their size and shape – hypertrophy (building muscle) and atrophy (losing muscle)

The ‘toning up’ that is commonly referred to in the health and fitness industry actually refers to making muscles more visible. This is possible by stressing the muscles and causing hypertrophy to occur, while also reducing body fat.

I find it interesting how often terms are utilised and they are actually physiologically and scientifically incorrect.

So next time you talk about wanting to tone up you will know that you actually just want to reduce your body fat percentage and build your muscles!

Keep working hard!!!
