I recently listened to a webinar talking about how to best help your clients lose weight as a Personal Trainer giving nutrition advice. Now the lady talking suggested that they should reduce portion sizes of their meals, which is effective in theory but I believe this means that they will just end up becoming hungry. They suggested that food eaten should provide less energy than the energy burned during a day – leading to a deficit.
Now I’m not saying this information is wrong, I’m just saying I think that there may be a more effective way of reducing the food intake, while keeping you from becoming hungry all the time. The secret is fibre. By ensuring you get 25-30g of fibre in a day you will not be as hungry, as fibre helps to provide the feeling of fullness. If you choose good sources of fibre, then you will be able to maintain a reasonably healthy diet and reduce the number of kJ you eat in a day.
Some easy snack options that are full of fibre include:
- Carrot sticks and dip (one of my recipes is sun-dried tomato dip)
- Raspberries (maybe with dark chocolate)
- Nuts
- Low sugar banana muffins
- Whole grain bread
- Celery sticks with dip
- Zucchini Fritters
Fibre slows the absorption of glucose and hence, it will provide a more sustained source of energy, helping to provide energy over a longer time, which means you will not need to eat again as soon.
Hope this helps!
